Bank Exchange Counters
Official bank exchange counters at Tribhuvan International Airport and throughout Kathmandu offer competitive, regulated rates. Look for Nepal Bank, Nabil Bank, or Standard Chartered in Thamel and Lakeside Pokhara.
ATMs
ATMs are widely available in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan. Most accept Visa, Mastercard, and Cirrus. Withdrawal limits are typically NPR 10,000–35,000 per transaction. Use ATMs inside bank branches for security. Your home bank may charge a foreign transaction fee.
Licensed Money Changers
Licensed forex offices in Thamel (look for the "Authorized Money Exchanger" sign) often offer slightly better rates than banks. Always check the posted rate and count your money before leaving. Avoid street changers — they are illegal.
Bring $100–$200 USD in cash as backup. Keep small denomination bills (singles and fives) for tips, teahouse meals, and small purchases. Notify your US bank/credit card before travel to avoid fraud blocks. Charles Schwab and Wise debit cards have no foreign ATM fees — excellent for Nepal travel.

Tipping in Nepal
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. As a guide:
