Top Attractions in Kathmandu

Boudhanath Stupa
One of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world. A living pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists. The all-seeing eyes of the Buddha gaze out from a magnificent golden tower. Best at sunrise when monks circumambulate and prayer flags flutter.
Pashupatinath Temple
Nepal's most sacred Hindu temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located on the banks of the holy Bagmati River. Witness cremation ghats, sadhus (holy men), and ancient rituals that have continued uninterrupted for over a thousand years.
Swayambhunath
The "Monkey Temple" — an ancient hilltop stupa with panoramic views over the Kathmandu Valley. Sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. The 365 steps to the top are lined with prayer wheels, shrines, and cheeky rhesus macaques.
Kathmandu Durbar Square
The ancient royal palace complex in the heart of the old city. A UNESCO World Heritage Site with towering pagoda temples, courtyards, and the living goddess Kumari's residence. Partially damaged in the 2015 earthquake but still magnificent.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square
14 km from Kathmandu, the medieval city of Bhaktapur is the best-preserved example of Newari architecture. Remarkably intact pagodas, pottery squares, and a car-free historic centre make it the most photogenic day trip from Kathmandu.
Patan Durbar Square
Just 5 km from Kathmandu in the ancient city of Lalitpur, Patan's Durbar Square features 136 bahals (courtyards) and 55 major temples. The Patan Museum here is one of the finest in Nepal.

Thamel — The Traveler's Hub
Thamel is Kathmandu's main tourist district — a dense maze of narrow streets lined with trekking shops, restaurants, cafés, bookshops, and rooftop bars. Almost every international traveler bases themselves here. The best Thamel streets for shopping: Chaksibari Marg (gear), J.P. Road (restaurants), and the central market for handicrafts.
Patan (Lalitpur)
South of Kathmandu, Patan feels like a step back in time. A quieter, more refined city of courtyards, Buddhist vihars, and excellent restaurants. The Patan Museum café is one of the best lunches in the valley.
Boudha
The area around Boudhanath Stupa is dominated by Tibetan Buddhist culture — monasteries, thangka painting schools, excellent Tibetan restaurants, and a deeply meditative atmosphere. Ideal for anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism.

Getting Around Kathmandu
Taxis & Ride Apps
Metered taxis and ride-share apps (Pathao, InDrive) are the easiest way to get around. Always ask the driver to use the meter, or agree on a fare in advance. Short trips: $1–$5. Airport: $8–$15.
Walking
The old city areas of Thamel, Boudha, and Patan are best explored on foot. Good walking shoes are essential — streets are uneven. Pollution can be significant; a light mask is useful during busy hours.
